Berlin just seems to be one of the most exciting places on the planet at the moment - as an experience of being there, its got all of the good things about being in a city without any of the bad ones! It just seems like a really creative place... I think we'd noticed when we were touring the immense amount of art on display in Berlin, just sort of as you walk the streets - just sculpture and just graffiti, y'know... the graffiti is the most amazing graffiti I've ever seen!
It just felt like a really exciting place to be and we wanted to just experience that for a slightly longer period of time than you get to when you're on tour, we wanted to sort of see how it would be to de-camp there for a while and so we've done that - we've been back and forth a couple of times and we found an amazing studio called Teldex which is this old factory, and its got this massive room for recording orchestras in and we just put a drum kit in the middle of it - I just made noise, hehe!
But yeah, Berlin... its just a really cool place to be, its a fun place to be... y'know, you can get back from the studio at like one in the morning and you can always find a bar thats open where you can just go and sit, and its not like a place where only the sort of people who are completely wrecked go for one more beer - its the kind of city where even in the middle of the night you can go and find some funky place where you'll hear something interesting on the stereo and I don't know... I just felt like the right place to be. And I mean that's aside from the history of the music that's been made there in the past - Bowie's time there, and I guess the most famous one would be U2 going back to make Achtung Baby... that history, and just getting off the train at Zoo Station, is a pretty cool experience. You feel like you're where its at, and that's a pretty exciting thing to feel when you're in the middle of making a record.

Berlín sencillamente parecer ser una de los lugares más emocionantes en el planeta en este momento, y la experiencia de estar allá tiene todas las cosas buenas de estar en una ciudad pero sin ninguno de los puntos malos. Realmente es un lugar muy creativo. Creo que nos habíamos dado cuenta cuando estuvimos de gira de la inmensa cantidad de arte que se muestra en Berlín y sabes, si caminas por la calle, sólo escultura, sólo graffiti, tu sabes, el graffiti… ¡el graffiti es el más asombroso que alguna vez haya visto!.
Suena como un lugar realmente emocionante para estar y quisimos experimentarlo por un periodo ligeramente más largo del que tienes cuando estas de gira, queríamos de alguna manera ver como sería si acampábamos allá por un tiempo y lo hemos hecho - hemos vuelto y nos hemos estado de un lado para el otro un par de veces y hemos encontrado un asombroso estudio llamado Teldex, el cual es una vieja fábrica, tiene sus enormes salas de grabación para orquestas y nosotros sólo pusimos un kit de batería en mitad de eso – yo sólo hice ruido (risas).
Pero si, Berlin es realmente un lugar genial y divertido para estar, sabes, puedes volver del estudio a la una de la mañana y siempre puedes encontrar un bar que esté abierto y simplemente ir y sentarte. No es como un lugar donde, sólo el tipo de gente completamente arruinada va por una cerveza más - es el tipo de ciudad donde inclusive en medio de la noche, puedes ir y encontrar algún lugar divertido donde escuches algo interesante en el equipo de sonido y, no sé, sencillamente me pareció el lugar correcto para estar. Y me refiero a que eso es aparte de la historia de la música que ha sido hecha allá en el pasado, Bowie tiene tiempo allá y supongo que el más famoso sería U2 volviendo a hacer Achtung Baby… esa historia, y simplemente bajarse del tren en la Zoo Station, es una experiencia muy bonita. Tienes ganas de estar donde eso sucede, y ésa es una cosa bastante emocionante que sientes cuando estás en el medio de hacer un álbum.
